Garden Update, June 2021, Dragon Fruit, Jelly Melons and Chinese Peppers, Oh My!

I have several experiments that I am currently working on in the garden. It has been a couple of months on the oldest so I figured it was time for an update. There is a whole gaggle of updates to to give. We have the Dragon Fruit, Jelly Melon and 10 Year old Chinese Peppers, just waiting for an updating. Lets get the garden update for June 2021 going.

Garden Update 2021, Dragon Fruit

So when I did the dragon fruit thing, I thought I would be getting a big strong plant going. One that that is several years from production but a powerfully vigorous plant nonetheless. I wanted a governator level of plant.

Instead, I got a plant.

You might be asking, “Hey, where there not more plants then that?” If you thought that, good job. There was more plants. It was an accident. There were bums, gravity and precarious perches involved. It was a sad day. Needless to say these are some tough plants that have remained.

I have hardened them off to summer but they don’t seem interested in growing. I mean they look like they are not all that different from a nearly 7 weeks ago.

Mid May Plants

They are a touch sturdier but this is looking like it is going to be more challenging than I originally thought.

Jelly Melon

So this one is not so old, but they are looking strong. I have also got additional plants growing so there was a flaw in my growing that gave the top two rows an advantage.

I stole 3 and gained them back.

When the Jelly Melons decide to grow they do it fast. 10 days to get this big seedlings. I have no ideas where I am going to be able to put them. My potato containers are the most likely place and I will let them ride out the year there. I have not decided. I still need to pull the spuds so there is time.

Speaking of the original four. You see the last of them in the bottom of the above picture. Lets check in with two of the others. These got planted on Tuesday.

I need to apply more mulch but otherwise they have handled the upper 90’s and high winds well. I kind of hope they do work out. It is hard to find a plant that seems to be that freaking tough and will produce fruit.

The 2010 Chinese Peppers

If you remember from a few weeks ago, I found some 10 year old seed from a pepper that a friend of mine gave me of a Chinese pepper.

After going through the germination battle, the results of the aftermath were pretty good. I got 4 seeds to sprout and push through the soil upon transplant. One died, another is weak and two are going well.

They have been hardened off to the outside and are still in their little pots.

Even the runt is powering through, June 26, 2021.

These guys are doing great. I am excited because at this point they are nearly ready for transplant. I am preparing to start pulling my various cabbages. They should have been done by now but they were just so stunted at the start of the year, stupid Martian soil. When they are gone, these guys are going to be going into the ground. Hopefully this fall as the temps decrease, I will get to see what kind of pepper they are. I have no idea with what they cross pollinated.

While not much has changed since the original articles, everything is doing well. I hope the dragon fruit will start doing something serious. It does seem to be getting stouter so that is something. My Jelly Melon and pepper plants are looking strong. I am really excited by these two. Overall, I am happy with my mad sciencing.

I hope my July 2021 Garden Update does as well as my June 2021. It has been a great month for the garden. A miserable one for me but a great one for the garden.
